Pathways to Australia permanent residency

Australian immigration offers many options to submit for the Permanent Residency. You can select the most appropriate option for yourself, based on your eligibility and requirements. Some of the popular options for Australian permanent residency:

Skilled Independent Permit (Subclass 189): This permit is suitable for skilled workers. No requirement for a nominator or sponsor.

Skilled Nominated Permit (Subclass 190): This Australia Permit is applicable to skilled workers who have a nomination from an Australian state/Territory. For this Permit, your occupation should be on the Skilled Occupation List.  

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Subclass 489 Permit: Under this permit, skilled workers and their families must live, work and study in designated regional areas for 5 years. They will be eligible for a Permanent Residency after three years.

Each of the immigration pathways has a certain fixed number of Australian Permanent Residency places available in a program year. The limit is as per the annual migration planning levels of the Department of Home Affairs of the Australian government.

Eligibility requirements

The specific eligibility requirements vary as per the particular Permanent Residency Permit. However, there are certain basic eligibility criteria that must be met.

The general eligibility requirements to migrate to Australia include –

  • Age: Your age should be below 45 years to submit for a Permanent Residency.
  • Language Proficiency: You should have proof that you have a competent level of proficiency in the English language.
  • Health and character: You should have good health and character.
  • Skills:You must have your skills assessed by certifying authorities in Australia. The candidate must get a Skill Assessment done from the relevant skills assessing authority.
  • Occupation: Your occupation must be listed in the Skilled Occupation List (SOL).
Requirements in permanent residency

Generally, the following requirements will be required when submitting for an Australian Permanent Residency –

  • Duly filled forms
  • Report of Educational Credential Assessment
  • Birth certificate
  • Character certificate
  • Proof of nomination (if any)
  • English language test results
  • Two passport-sized photos
  • Spouse skill forms, if necessary
  • Police Clearance Certification (PCC)
  • Business reference letters

Steps to submit

Step 1:  Check the eligibility requirements for Australian immigration

Step 2:  Take the English proficiency Test

Step 3: Select your occupation from the Skilled Occupation List (SOL)

You can select your occupation from –

  • Short-term Skilled Occupation List (SOL)
  • Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL)
  • Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)

Step 4: Register your Expression of Interest in Australia’s SkillSelect website. Provide all the required information in the online submission form.

Step 5: Get your Invitation to Apply (ITA). Once you submit your form and if it meets all the requirements then you will get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Australia Permanent Residency.

Step 6: Submit your Permanent Residency. You must submit it within 60 days of getting your ITA with all the supporting forms and certificates.

Step 7: Get your clearance certificates and submit them. This includes your police clearance certificate and medical clearance certificate.

Step 8:  Get your permit. The last step is getting your Australia Permit.
