What is an LMIA?

The Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is an evaluation system used by the Canadian government to assess the impact of a foreign worker on Canada's labor market. The LMIA result should be positive or neutral for the applicant to be eligible for a Canadian work permit.

The LMIA helps understand if a citizen of Canada or a PR holder is available to fill a job vacancy. Newcomers in Canada willing to work and settle in the country can apply for an LMIA-supported work permit. Job roles that receive LMIA are often in high demand in Canada.

How can newcomers use this information?

Newcomers, who need an LMIA and have flexible work choice, can look for occupations that received maximum number of LMIAs in the past. Employers recruiting foreign workers should apply for the LMIA and complete the fee payment.

While applying for an LMIA, employers should follow the steps complying with TFWP standards. In March 2024, Canada introduced changes to the validity periods and quotas for workforce to the TFWP and LMIAs.
